Hi, I’m Sarah Fader!
I’m a single mom, writer, cat lover, and mental health advocate. I’m a native New Yorker who enjoys naps, talking to strangers, and caring for my two small humans and two average-sized cats.
I’ve been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Quartz, Psychology Today, The Huffington Post, HuffPost Live, and Good Day New York. I have published and edited over 15 books, including three mental health books co-written with clinical psychologists and Amazon Best Sellers.
Going Viral
I started my blog Old School/New School Mom in 2009 when my son, Ari, was one. Initially, I wrote about parenting and life anecdotes. But, once I got more comfortable with my voice, I started writing about more vulnerable topics like mental health.
Like six million other Americans, I live with Bipolar type II, OCD ADHD, and PTSD. I wrote a viral article called “Fighting The Stigma of Mental Illness” for the Huffington Post. It was the first time I had written the words “I have panic disorder.” After that the floodgates opened and I was writing about mental health like crazy, pun intended.
Stigma Fighters
I co-founded a mental health non-profit with my best friend, Allie Burke, who has paranoid schizophrenia. Stigma Fighters is dedicated to helping real people living with mental illness. We created a space where real people with mental illness could share their stories in 1,000 words. We then compiled the stories in anthologies.
Stigma Fighters has been featured on Good Day New York, Psychology Today, Women’s Health Magazine, and The Washington Post. Through Stigma Fighters, Sarah hopes to change the world, one mental health stigma at a time.
